The project
Since 2019, I've been designing and evolving my own home automation setup. Home Assistant orchestrates everything, a Zigbee network connects sensors and devices, and services run in Docker containers and virtual machines.
The setup is fully self-hosted: storage relies on a Synology NAS, and remote access goes through a VPN and SSH, without exposing services directly to the internet.
What it taught me
This long-running project sparked my interest in IoT: wireless protocols, networking, security, containerisation and the reliability of a system that has to run around the clock. It's the experience I later built on to design Pool Nexus.
